Painted in 1868, "The Betrothed" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir captures the elegance and tenderness of a young middle-class couple in all their romantic splendor. This oil on canvas, created when the artist was only twenty-seven years old, already testifies to his exceptional mastery of portraiture and his sensitivity to human intimacy. The painting depicts Alfred and Marie Sisley – the Impressionist painter and his wife – immortalized just a few months after their marriage. Renoir composed a scene that is both formal and warm: the man, dressed in an elegant dark suit enhanced by a bow tie, stands while his companion, seated, displays a spectacular orange and white striped dress typical of Second Empire fashion. Housed in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, this conjugal portrait perfectly illustrates the pivotal period when Renoir wavered between tradition and modernity. The work was created two years before the Franco-Prussian War and six years before the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, which would revolutionize art history.
