About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1506 by Raphael, then merely twenty-three years old, Lady with a Unicorn bears witness to the brilliant precocious mastery of the young prodigy from Urbino. This oil on canvas of modest dimensions – 51 x 65 cm – captures a young woman of serene beauty, dressed in a sumptuous Renaissance gown in burgundy and olive tones, delicately holding a miniature unicorn between her hands. The mythical creature, a traditional symbol of purity and chastity, transforms this intimate portrait into a refined allegory. The composition is set within an open loggia, framed by Doric columns that reveal a rolling landscape with the characteristic atmospheric blues of the artist's native Umbria.
The painting technique reveals the decisive influence of Perugino, Raphael's master, particularly in the delicate modeling of the face with idealized features and the contemplative serenity that emanates from her gaze. The subtle chromatic transitions, the nascent sfumato that softens the contours, and the perfect balance between figure and architecture testify to a precocious assimilation of Florentine innovations. The pendant adorned with a pearl suspended at the young woman's neck, like the delicacy of the hands with tapered fingers, already demonstrate that virtuosic attention to detail which would characterize Raphael's entire oeuvre. The harmonious color palette, dominated by deep reds, tender greens and luminous flesh tones, is fully inscribed within the aesthetics of Italian High Renaissance.
Preserved today in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, this canvas was long known under the title Portrait of a Young Woman until an X-ray revealed the original presence of the unicorn, subsequently repainted as a dog. This rediscovery made it possible to restore the primary allegorical meaning of the work, probably commissioned on the occasion of an aristocratic betrothal. A youthful masterpiece announcing the master's later psychological portraits, Lady with a Unicorn remains an exceptional testimony to the awakening of Raphael's genius and the ideal of feminine beauty that would traverse the entire Italian Renaissance.
