Painted in 1882, Édouard Manet's Bar at the Folies-Bergère stands as the ultimate masterpiece of an artist already weakened by illness. This major canvas captures the electric atmosphere of the famous Parisian music hall through the melancholic gaze of a young barmaid named Suzon. Standing behind her marble counter, she fixes the viewer with an expression of weary indifference, almost absent, while reflected behind her in a vast mirror is the bustle of the hall: a suspended trapeze artist, an elegant crowd and dazzling lights. On the bar are lined up champagne bottles, liqueurs with meticulously reproduced labels, fresh roses and a bowl of golden mandarins that introduce vibrant touches of color into a palette dominated by deep blacks, luminous whites and delicate flesh tones.
Manet's technique reaches remarkable freedom here: rapid and seemingly spontaneous brushstrokes, virtuoso treatment of reflections in the bottles and mirror, bold juxtaposition of detailed areas and others barely sketched in. The reflection in the glass moreover poses a fascinating visual enigma: the barmaid appears offset, conversing with a top-hatted client whose actual position remains impossible to determine according to the laws of optics. This deliberate distortion, far from being clumsy, suggests the fragmentation of modern perception and the alienation of social relations in Belle Époque Paris.
A tutelary figure of pictorial modernity, Manet achieves with this work a masterful synthesis of his research on the representation of contemporary life.
