About this artwork - painting analysis

Created in 1929, Paul Klee's Main Path and Side Paths offers a poetic and geometric vision of the landscape, transforming the observation of cultivated fields into an abstract chromatic mosaic. The Swiss artist develops an aerial representation of agricultural plots, where bands of colored earth overlap and intertwine according to a slightly bird's-eye perspective. The dominant tones – azure blue, vivid orange, solar yellow and tender green – organize themselves in horizontal strata in the upper portion, evoking a marine or celestial horizon, while the rest of the composition fragments into trapezoids and irregular rectangles that suggest the rural parceling seen from above.

The technique employed reveals Klee's singular mastery in the use of oil paint and watercolor on prepared support. The surfaces present a characteristic cracked texture, resulting from a process of sizing and layering of pictorial layers that the artist was particularly fond of. These cracks lend the whole work a tactile and temporal dimension, as if the canvas bore the stigmata of time and weathering. The fine dark lines that delimit the plots structure the composition while creating a visual rhythm close to musical notation, a fundamental passion of Klee that regularly shines through in his pictorial work.

Created during his teaching period at the Bauhaus in Dessau, this work perfectly illustrates the synthesis that Klee achieves between geometric abstraction and sensitive observation of nature. A historic member of the Der Blaue Reiter expressionist movement and a major figure in European modern art, he develops here a unique visual language, midway between imaginary cartography and colored score. Housed today in the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Main Path and Side Paths testifies to this rare capacity to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, establishing a fertile dialogue between simplified figuration and pure abstraction that would enduringly inspire subsequent artistic generations.
