About this artwork - painting analysis
Paul Klee's "Angelus Novus," created in 1920, presents an enigmatic figure that seems to float in an undefined space, between earth and sky. This hybrid creature, half-angel half-monster, is characterized by its disproportionate face dominated by two large, fixed eyes that immediately captivate the viewer's gaze. Its stylized hair evokes scrolls or curled antennae, while its raised hands, with splayed fingers, suggest a gesture of astonishment or revelation. The thread-like body extends into a triangular dress from which emerge spindly legs ending in almost claw-like feet, accentuating the impression of a fantastic creature suspended in time.
The chromatic palette favors ochre, beige and brown tones, enhanced by subtle touches of yellow that concentrate light at the center of the composition. Klee employs here a mixed technique combining watercolor, Chinese ink and oil transfer on paper mounted on cardboard, giving the whole work a aged and parchment-like texture. The contours traced in black ink define the forms with an economy of means characteristic of the artist, while the washes create a vaporous and dreamlike atmosphere. This aesthetic recalls primitive art and children's drawings, major sources of inspiration for the Bauhaus master.
Created shortly after the First World War, "Angelus Novus" belongs to the fertile period in which Klee develops his unique pictorial language, halfway between abstraction and figuration. The work, acquired in 1921 by philosopher Walter Benjamin who made it a major meditation on history in his theses on progress, has acquired considerable philosophical significance. Preserved today in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, this small watercolor continues to exercise a lasting fascination, embodying Klee's ability to transform elementary forms into universal symbols charged with mystery and visionary poetry.
