About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in 1610, shortly before his death, The Opening of the Fifth Seal of the Apocalypse illustrates the prophetic vision described in the Book of Saint John. El Greco transposes here a mystical episode in which the souls of the martyrs, represented by naked figures, receive white robes while awaiting the Last Judgment. On the left, Saint John raises his arms toward heaven in a gesture of mystical ecstasy, draped in a blue-green mantle with sinuous and tormented folds. Facing him, an angel leans forward to offer sacred garments to the suppliant souls, while a blood-red fabric lies in the foreground, evoking the sacrifice of the martyrs.

The vertical composition accentuates the soaring quality of the bodies and conveys intense spiritual tension, characteristic of late Mannerism. The elongated figures, with deliberately distorted proportions, seem to rise toward a tumultuous sky where clouds swirl in ochre, yellow, and brown tones. This anatomical distortion, El Greco's signature, intensifies the visionary and supernatural atmosphere of the scene. The chromatic palette oscillates between icy blues, acid greens, and brilliant yellows, creating vibrant contrasts that amplify the dramatic dimension. Light comes from no natural source: it emanates from the bodies themselves, conferring upon the whole a phosphorescent and unreal quality.

Settled in Toledo since 1577, the Cretan painter Domínikos Theotokópoulos develops in this testamentary work a deeply personal vision of Spanish sacred art. Long misunderstood, this painting was rediscovered in the early twentieth century by Expressionists who hailed its bold modernity. Now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this unfinished canvas represents the apex of El Greco's mystical style, where figuration breaks free from classical canons to achieve pure spiritual expression. Its influence spans the centuries, heralding the formal upheavals of modern art.
