About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in 1865, the Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Edmondo Morbilli bears witness to a pivotal moment in Edgar Degas's career, when the artist was still exploring the conventions of bourgeois portraiture before devoting himself to scenes of modern Parisian life. The work depicts his sister Thérèse and her Italian brother-in-law, Baron Edmondo Morbilli, whom she had married the previous year. The couple poses with restrained dignity, he in a dark suit and she dressed in a grey-blue gown with silken reflections. The balanced composition reveals the influence of Italian Renaissance masters whom Degas had studied extensively during his stay in Italy between 1856 and 1859, particularly Florentine and Venetian couple portraits.

The sober palette—dominated by browns, greys, and ochres—lends the whole work an almost melancholic gravity, heightened by the thoughtful expressions of the sitters. Degas demonstrates here his mastery of traditional academic painting, with meticulous modeling of the flesh tones and remarkable attention to the textures of fabrics. The light, diffuse and filtered, delicately sculpts the faces and creates an atmosphere of contemplative intimacy. The background with its golden and greenish tones suggests a prosperous bourgeois interior without ever diverting attention from the main figures.

This canvas reveals a Degas still far from the compositional and chromatic boldness that would characterize his later Impressionist works. Yet one can already perceive his fascination with the psychology of his subjects and his talent for capturing the subtle nuances of human relationships. Thérèse's gesture, raising her hand to her face, introduces a note of intimacy that breaks with the conventional rigidity of official portraiture. Housed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, this double portrait perfectly illustrates the transition between Degas's classical training and his evolution toward a modernity that would revolutionize nineteenth-century painting, already asserting his unique sensitivity to psychological expression.
