Altarpiece of the Lamb (Outer Panels)

Artwork by Jan van Eyck • 1432

About this artwork - painting analysis

Closed like a sacred casket, the outer shutters of the Ghent Altarpiece that Jan van Eyck completed in 1432 offer a striking vision of contemplation and austerity. These panels, visible when the polyptych is closed, present a remarkable composition organized in two registers. At the upper level, the Annunciation unfolds in a Flemish interior bathed in soft, diffuse light, where the angel Gabriel addresses the Virgin Mary in a scene of deeply moving intimacy. The lower registers reveal grisaille portraits of the two Saint Johns – the Baptist and the Evangelist – framing the kneeling figures of the commissioners, Jodocus Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut, represented with a striking realism that testifies to the genius of the Flemish master.

Jan van Eyck's technique reaches the heights of virtuosity here. The outer shutters, painted in oil on oak wood, demonstrate his absolute mastery of rendering textures and materials. The grisaille used for the statues of the Saint Johns creates an illusion of stone sculpture of astounding accuracy, while the delicate colours of the Annunciation subtly contrast with this monochrome treatment. Every detail – from gilded inscriptions to the folds of drapery – reveals the meticulous observation of reality characteristic of the Flemish Primitives.

Housed in Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, this masterpiece of late International Gothic marks the transition towards the Northern Renaissance. Van Eyck, court painter to the Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good, revolutionized Western art through his innovative use of oil painting and his ability to capture natural light with unprecedented precision. The altarpiece experienced a tumultuous history, narrowly escaping iconoclastic destruction and undergoing several relocations.

This hidden face of the polyptych, intended for daily contemplation, embodies the profound spirituality of the fifteenth-century Burgundian world and remains an irreplaceable testimony to Flemish technical excellence that would durably influence European painting.
