About this artwork - painting analysis

Undisputed master of Flemish painting in the 15th century, Jan van Eyck signs with the Portrait of Cardinal Albergati one of the pinnacles of portraiture art in the Northern Renaissance. Painted around 1431-1432, this panel of modest dimensions – 34 x 28 centimetres – captures with remarkable psychological acuity the personality of Cardinal Niccolò Albergati, papal legate and leading diplomat. The prelate appears three-quarter length, dressed in the cardinal's red habit which structures the composition through its intense mass of colour. His weathered face, marked by age and responsibility, stands out against a neutral greenish-brown background, concentrating all attention on the meditative expression of the sitter. The hands, delicately placed one upon the other, reveal the same descriptive precision as the features of the face.

Van Eyck's technique achieves here a perfection that astounds us still today. A pioneer in the use of oil painting, the artist exploits this medium to create superimpositions of translucent glazes that give the flesh an almost tangible vitality. Every wrinkle, every pore of skin, every tiny vein is rendered with near-microscopic precision, yet never falling into dryness. The light, soft and lateral, subtly models the volumes of the face and makes the folds of the scarlet cloth vibrate, demonstrating the painter's absolute mastery in the rendering of textures.

This work bears witness to the meeting between van Eyck and Albergati during a diplomatic mission to Bruges in 1431. A preparatory drawing, preserved in Dresden, proves that the artist first sketched the cardinal from life before creating this definitive portrait. The painting is now part of the prestigious collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, where it continues to embody the humanist ideal of the Flemish Renaissance – that of optical realism pushed to its apex, in service of a profound exploration of the human soul.
