About this artwork - painting analysis
Created in 1436, the Portrait of Jan de Leeuw embodies the art of Flemish portraiture at its height, as Jan van Eyck masterfully defined it during the first decades of the fifteenth century. On this small oak panel with intimate dimensions – barely 25 x 19 centimetres – the face of a man with a penetrating gaze is revealed, captured in all its humanity. The sitter, whose identity is disclosed to us by an inscription on the reverse, stands out against a neutral and dark background that concentrates attention on his individualized features. The Flemish painter deploys here his extraordinary talent for observation, capturing every physiognomic detail with near-photographic precision: the texture of the skin, nascent wrinkles, the brightness of the gaze directed towards the viewer.
The technique of oil painting, which Jan van Eyck perfected and popularized, makes it possible to achieve that luminous transparency characteristic of Flemish primitives. The successive glazes create a remarkable chromatic depth, notably in the flesh tones where ochres, pinks and greys subtly intermingle. The light, coming from the left, models the face with natural softness while revealing the relief of the cheekbones and the architecture of the skull. The scarlet red turban that crowns the sitter brings a touch of vivid colour and affirms his social status, while the dark garment maintains the chromatic balance of the composition.
Jan de Leeuw, a Bruges goldsmith and respected member of his guild, belonged to the circle of notables whom van Eyck portrayed with uncompromising fidelity. This work is part of the tradition of Northern bourgeois portraiture, where truthful representation takes precedence over idealization. Preserved at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, this portrait bears witness to the artistic revolution led by van Eyck, who definitively transformed the genre of portraiture by affirming the dignity of the individual and the importance of his gaze turned towards us, abolishing the centuries that separate us.
