About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1434 by Jan van Eyck, the Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife remains one of the most fascinating and enigmatic masterpieces in the history of Western art. This oil on wood panel of modest dimensions – 82 x 60 cm – depicts a wealthy Tuscan merchant established in Bruges and his young companion, standing in the intimate setting of a Flemish bourgeois bedroom. The couple stands solemnly at the centre of the composition: Giovanni, dressed in a sumptuous violet cloak trimmed with fur, raises his right hand as if taking an oath, while his wife, draped in an emerald green dress with generous folds, delicately offers him her left hand. The atmosphere is bathed in soft, golden light that filters through the window on the left, revealing every detail with an almost photographic precision.
Jan van Eyck's technical virtuosity reaches unparalleled heights here. An undisputed master of Early Flemish painting, he masterfully exploits the oil painting technique to create stunning effects of transparency, texture and depth. Every element – from the lustre of the brass chandelier to the oranges placed on the windowsill, from the small griffon dog to the slippers abandoned on the floor – is rendered with hallucinatory precision. The convex mirror hanging on the back wall constitutes a remarkable technical feat: it reflects the entire scene, including two witnesses in the doorway, thus creating a fascinating mise en abyme.
Held at the National Gallery in London since 1842, this painting still provokes intense debate among historians today. Does it represent a marriage, a commercial contract, or a more intimate scene? The bold signature – "Jan van Eyck fuit hic" (Jan van Eyck was here) – suggests that the painter may have been a witness to an official ceremony. This fundamental work of the Early Flemish movement continues to exert considerable influence, establishing the codes of genre portraiture and testifying to the extraordinary cultural refinement of the Northern Quattrocento.
