About this artwork - painting analysis
Commissioned around 1435 by Nicolas Rolin, the powerful chancellor of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy, The Virgin of Chancellor Rolin brings together the sacred and the profane with unprecedented boldness in a single scene of striking spiritual intensity. Jan van Eyck displays all his genius here in portraying the kneeling dignitary facing the Virgin and Child, in a face-to-face encounter imbued with solemn dignity. The nearly square format – 66 x 62 centimetres – concentrates attention on this mystical meeting unfolding beneath a triple arcade opening onto an urban landscape of stunning precision. The warm colours of the chancellor's garments, his rich purple and gold brocade mantle, harmoniously dialogue with the Virgin's deep blue mantle and the brilliant red of her dress.
The Flemish master demonstrates here his absolute mastery of oil painting technique, revolutionary for the time. Every detail – the pearls of the crown held by the angel, the sculptured capitals depicting biblical scenes, the reflections on the tiled floor – testifies to a meticulous observation of reality. Natural light floods the scene from the left, creating effects of transparency and depth characteristic of the Flemish Primitives' style. Beyond the loggia, the urban landscape traversed by a sinuous river reveals a panoramic view in which some have believed they could recognize Lyon, Autun or Liège, attesting to van Eyck's attention to topographical representation.
Preserved in the Louvre Museum since the French Revolution, this major work of the Flemish Renaissance illustrates the emergence of a new conception of votive portraiture in which the patron dares to have himself represented as an equal to sacred figures. The Virgin of Chancellor Rolin remains a fundamental milestone in the history of Western art, embodying the transition towards a humanism that places man at the heart of divine representation.
