About this artwork - painting analysis
Jean-Honoré Fragonard transposes all the mythological sensuality dear to French Rococo of the eighteenth century in "Cupid and Psyche." This painting illustrates one of the most celebrated episodes from Apuleius's Metamorphoses: the amorous encounter between the winged god and the mortal woman of incomparable beauty. The composition presents the two lovers entwined in a whirlwind of vaporous drapery and pearlescent flesh, where Cupid, recognizable by his outstretched wings, tenderly embraces Psyche in an atmosphere of voluptuous intimacy. The bodies entwine gracefully upon a sumptuous bed while a knowing cherub observes the scene, reinforcing the allegorical dimension of this forbidden love.
The chromatic palette unfolds in warm and soft tones – delicate pinks, luminous golds and ivory whites – that bathe the scene in golden and caressing light. Fragonard here masters his virtuoso and rapid brushwork, characteristic of his style, where swift brushstrokes create a sensation of movement and lightness. The fabrics seem to float in air, the flesh tones breathe with life, and the whole exudes that dreamlike atmosphere peculiar to the gallant scenes of the painter from Grasse. This fluid and spontaneous pictorial technique stands in opposition to the nascent neoclassicism, making Fragonard one of the last defenders of the rocaille spirit.
Likely created in the 1770s-1780s, this oil on canvas belongs to the tradition of mythological subjects treated with a freedom and sensuality that earned Fragonard his reputation as painter of love and elegant libertinism. Housed today in a private collection, the work bears witness to this flourishing period of French art preceding the Revolution, when aristocratic patrons sought scenes that were both refined and erotic to adorn their private chambers. "Cupid and Psyche" remains a perfect example of this fusion between technical virtuosity and hedonistic celebration that characterizes Fragonard's genius.
