About this artwork - painting analysis
The Vitruvian Man, drawn by Leonardo da Vinci in 1487, embodies the perfect synthesis between art and science that characterizes the Italian Renaissance. This masterful study of human proportions, executed in pen, ink and wash on paper, illustrates the theories of Roman architect Vitruvius on the harmonious relationships of the human body. The Florentine genius depicts a naked man in two superimposed positions: with arms and legs spread wide, he is simultaneously inscribed within a circle and a square, geometric figures symbolizing respectively the cosmos and the earthly realm.
The composition testifies to Leonardo da Vinci's rigorous scientific approach. The drawing stands out for its precise line and anatomical accuracy, the fruit of meticulous observations and clandestine dissections conducted by the artist. The sepia and ochre tones, characteristic of drawings from this period, lend the whole an elegant restraint. The handwritten annotations in mirror script – that famous reversed writing peculiar to Leonardo – surround the figure and detail the mathematical proportions: a man's height equals the span of his arms, the navel constitutes the center of the circle, each part of the body maintains measurable relationships with the whole.
This work crystallizes the humanist ideal of the Renaissance, placing man at the center of the universe and seeking to unlock the secrets of Creation through rational observation. Housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice, it is rarely displayed due to its extreme fragility. The drawing, created while Leonardo was working in Milan for Ludovico Sforza, illustrates his conviction that art and science are inseparable.
The Vitruvian Man remains one of the most famous and reproduced images in art history, a universal symbol of harmony, perfection and the humanist quest for knowledge that continues to inspire artists, scientists and thinkers across the centuries.
