About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted around 1653-1654 by Johannes Vermeer, long before his celebrated intimate interior scenes, Diana and Her Companions bears witness to an lesser-known facet of the Delft master. This youthful canvas depicts a mythological episode inspired by Ovid: the goddess of the hunt, Diana, surrounded by her nymphs in a twilight landscape. At the center of the composition, dressed in a sumptuous golden yellow gown, the main figure lowers her eyes with melancholy while a servant gently washes her feet – a gesture imbued with humility that contrasts with the divine majesty of the subject. Three other companions complete this silent scene, creating an atmosphere of almost sacred contemplation. A white dog, the traditional symbol of fidelity, rests peacefully in the foreground.
The color palette unfolds around deep yellows, warm ochres and orange-reds that contrast with the dark greens of the lush foliage in the background. The light, still tentative in its treatment, nevertheless announces the luminous mastery that would characterize Vermeer's later masterpieces. The ample draperies reveal the influence of Italian and Flemish masters, notably that of the Utrecht school which favored Caravaggesque subjects. This work is part of the context of the Dutch Golden Age, a period when mythological painting coexisted with genre scenes that would become the artist's specialty.
Housed at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, this oil on canvas measuring 97.8 × 104.6 cm remains one of Vermeer's rare mythological compositions, which he quickly abandoned to devote himself to domestic interiors bathed in light. Long attributed to other painters, the work was not definitively recognized as an authentic Vermeer until the early twentieth century. Diana and Her Companions thus constitutes a precious testimony to the early stylistic research of an artist who would become one of the greatest masters of Dutch painting.
