About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in 1842 by William Turner, Peace – Burial at Sea captures the solemn moment of the maritime funeral of his friend and rival, Scottish painter David Wilkie, who died off Gibraltar on his return from the East. The work bears witness to a deeply moving personal tribute, transcended by the mystical vision of the British master. At the centre of the composition, a dark ship with an imposing silhouette stands out against a vaporous horizon, while a shaft of golden light illuminates the scene vertically, evoking both the funeral ceremony and spiritual transcendence. Forms dissolve into an atmospheric haze where sky and sea seem to merge, creating a cosmic unity characteristic of Turner's late Romanticism.

The chromatic palette oscillates between warm browns, luminous golds and pearl greys that envelop the whole in a twilight atmosphere. The ship, almost ghostly, seems to emerge from misty depths while its vibrant reflection in the water creates a troubling play of symmetry. Turner employs his sfumato technique here pushed to the extreme, dissolving contours in translucent layers of pigment, privileging atmospheric evocation over precise description. This innovative approach, often criticised by his contemporaries for its lack of detail, already heralds impressionist research into light and movement.

Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842 alongside Snow Storm, this square-format canvas – unusual for the time – provoked contrasting reactions. Some critics deplored its indistinct character, while others hailed its emotional power. Turner, then aged 67, was reaching the ultimate maturity of his art, liberated from academic conventions. The work, today housed in the Clore Gallery in London, remains a poignant testimony to the painter's ability to transmute a personal event into a universal meditation on death, passage and eternity, consolidating his position as a precursor of pictorial modernity.
