About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1872, The Ferry of Île de la Loge, Flood by Alfred Sisley captures a fleeting moment when nature reasserts its dominance over the French rural landscape. The Anglo-French artist immortalizes here the banks of the Seine submerged by floodwaters, a recurring theme in his work that testifies to his fascination with meteorological whims and their effects on the environment. In the foreground, bare trees emerge from the waters, their dark silhouettes reflected on the shimmering surface of the water. In the background, houses with ochre roofs and light-coloured facades stand stoically against the rising waters, while a few small boats suggest human presence confronted by the elements.
The colour palette favours soft and harmonious tones – pale blues, golden ochres, beiges and creamy whites – which give the scene a peaceful atmosphere despite the exceptional situation. Sisley deploys Impressionist technique here in all its subtlety: rapid and visible brushstrokes, construction through juxtaposition of pure colours, capture of the winter light that filters through the clouds and spreads across the watery expanse. The sky occupies a large portion of the composition, revealing the importance the artist accorded to atmospheric conditions in the perception of landscape.
This work is fully part of the nascent Impressionist approach, a movement of which Sisley was one of the most faithful and consistent members. The year 1872 marks a particularly fruitful period for painters working en plein air around Paris, notably in the Seine valley where Sisley would settle permanently. The choice to depict a flood reflects his interest in the ephemeral transformations of landscape, a theme he would explore repeatedly, particularly during the Port-Marly floods of 1876.
Today housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, this canvas testifies to Sisley's ability to transform a disruptive climatic event into a lyrical meditation on the relationship between man and his natural environment.
