Painted during the summer of 1890, merely weeks before Georges Seurat's premature death at the age of thirty-one, The Channel at Gravelines, Evening ranks among the final brilliant manifestations of neo-impressionism. The painting depicts the small port of Gravelines in northern France, where the artist stayed in July and August of that fateful year. In a twilight atmosphere of absolute serenity, two sailboats glide across the calm waters of the channel while a monumental anchor stands out in the foreground, cast upon the bank. The silhouette of a street lamp on the left and the outlines of a port building complete this composition of subtle geometry, where horizontal and vertical lines balance harmoniously.
Seurat's palette deploys here pastel tonalities of rare delicacy: pinks, peaches, pale blues and aquatic greens blend into a diffuse light typical of the maritime north.
