Pierre-Auguste Renoir signed in 1880 Sleeping Girl, a canvas imbued with that intimate softness which characterizes his most touching feminine portraits. The artist depicts a young woman dozing in a red armchair, dressed in a vaporous white bodice and a blue skirt where a striped cat rests. Her head slightly tilted, adorned with a blue ribbon decorated with flowers, she offers the image of peaceful abandon, a moment of rest captured with infinite tenderness. The pyramidal composition, centered on the female figure, creates an atmosphere of domestic tranquility where the sleeping animal heightens the sensation of warmth and security.

Renoir's palette deploys here his favorite chromatic harmonies: the vibrant red of the armchair dialogues with the deep blues of the skirt and ribbon, while the luminous white of the bodice captures and diffuses light with remarkable delicacy. The impressionist brushstrokes, quick and fluid, build volumes through the accumulation of pure colors rather than academic modeling.
