About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1867, Diana the Huntress marks a fascinating turning point in the career of the young artist, then twenty-six years old. This youthful canvas testifies to his ambition to distinguish himself at the official Salon by tackling a classical mythological subject. The Roman goddess of the hunt appears here in all her splendor, depicted nude, standing on rocks in the midst of a wooded landscape. She holds a bow firmly in her left hand while at her feet lies a slain deer, the trophy of her victorious hunt. The composition falls within the academic tradition, with this monumental female figure occupying the center of the canvas, bathed in soft light that models the volumes of her body.

Warm tones dominate the whole: Diana's pearlescent flesh contrasts subtly with the deep browns and ochres of the autumn foliage surrounding her. Renoir already demonstrates his mastery of the female form, which would become one of his stylistic signatures. The brushwork, however, remains smoother and more restrained than in his future Impressionist works, testifying to his academic training under Charles Gleyre and his admiration for the old masters, notably Courbet whose influence is felt in the realistic treatment of the nude.

This work belongs to a pivotal period when Renoir navigated between academic conventions and personal research. Presented at the 1867 Salon, it preceded by several years his participation in the Impressionist movement that would make him famous. The choice of model – presumably Lise Tréhot, the artist's companion and muse during this period – humanizes the mythological deity, giving her a carnal and contemporary presence.

Diana the Huntress thus reveals the classical foundations upon which Renoir would build his pictorial revolution. Held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, this canvas remains precious testimony to the first steps of a budding genius, oscillating between tradition and modernity.
