About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1642 by Rembrandt, "David and Jonathan" constitutes a striking representation of one of the most famous friendship episodes from the Old Testament. The work immortalizes the heartbreaking moment of farewell between Jonathan, son of King Saul, and David, the future king of Israel, forced to flee the royal wrath. The Dutch master chose to concentrate all the dramatic intensity on the embrace of the two protagonists, wrapped in sumptuous oriental costumes in golden and olive green tones. Jonathan, recognizable by his turban adorned with a feather and his rich cloak, tenderly embraces David in a gesture of protection and fraternal affection that transcends words.
The composition reveals all of Rembrandt's genius in his treatment of light and shadow, the chiaroscuro technique that he brings to its peak during this period of artistic maturity. A warm, golden luminosity bathes the central figures, detaching them from a background plunged into mysterious shadow where one can barely make out the contours of architecture and a few objects arranged on a table. This theatrical staging concentrates all attention on human emotion, an essential characteristic of Dutch Baroque. The precious fabrics are rendered with remarkable virtuosity, each fold and reflection bearing witness to the painter's incomparable technical mastery.
Created at the height of his fame in Amsterdam, this oil on canvas of modest dimensions – 73 x 61 centimeters – now preserved in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, falls within Rembrandt's fascinated period with biblical themes and characters in oriental costume. The artist transforms a sacred narrative into a profoundly human, universal scene, where the tenderness and sadness of separation touch the viewer across the centuries. This ability to infuse a moving humanity into biblical figures remains one of Rembrandt's most precious legacies to the history of Western art.
