About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in 1636 by Rembrandt, Danaë illustrates one of the most sensual myths of the classical tradition – that of a princess confined by her father and visited by Zeus in the form of a shower of gold. This canvas magnifies the mastery of chiaroscuro that defines the Dutch painter's signature style, placing at the center of the composition the nude and luminous body of a woman stretched out on a sumptuous bed, reaching toward an invisible divine presence.

The scene is bathed in a gilded penumbra where only Danaë's body radiates with a milky and warm complexion. Her raised hand, welcoming rather than modest, seems to call for the golden rain that is slow to appear. On the right, a cherub attached to the bed evokes Baroque iconography, while an elderly servant fades into the shadow on the left, marking the contrast between youth and maturity. The dark red draperies and precious fabrics create an opulent setting, enhanced by the warm golden tones characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt uses his sfumato technique here to blur the contours and create a dreamlike, almost unreal atmosphere.

Now displayed at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, this work experienced a tragic fate: in 1985, a visitor sprayed it with sulfuric acid, requiring twelve years of meticulous restoration. Beyond this dramatic incident, art historians have long debated the identity of the model – some seeing it as Saskia, the painter's wife, while others lean toward Geertje Dircx, his later companion, which would suggest retouches made after the original version.

This Danaë remains one of Rembrandt's most daring and sensual nudes, testifying to his unique ability to transcend the mythological subject to explore human intimacy. Through its luminous treatment and emotional charge, it leaves a lasting influence on the representation of the female body in Western painting.
