About this artwork - painting analysis
Raphael's La Fornarina stands as one of the most celebrated female portraits of the Italian Renaissance, embodying an unsettling vision of carnal beauty and sensual desire. Painted in 1519, this oil on wood depicts a half-naked young woman whose identity has long fueled speculation. According to tradition, she was Margherita Luti, daughter of a baker from the Trastevere district in Rome—hence the nickname "fornarina" meaning "little baker girl"—who is said to have been the passionate mistress of the Master of Urbino during his final years. The bracelet adorned with the name "Raphael" visible on the model's left arm reinforces this romantic hypothesis of a privileged relationship between the artist and his muse.
The composition strikes with its troubling intimacy: seated before a backdrop of myrtle and quince foliage, symbols of love and fertility, the young woman gazes directly at the viewer while modestly veiling her nudity with a crimson-red drapery. Her torso stands out against a dark background, while an Oriental turban crowns her dark hair. Light caresses the generous curves of her body with softness, subtly modeling the volumes in a harmony of warm tones—ochres, pearlescent pinks, and creamy whites. This unabashed sensuality contrasts with the more idealized representations typical of religious painting of the era.
Raphael deploys here all the technical mastery of sfumato he inherited from Leonardo da Vinci, creating imperceptible transitions between shadow and light. The tactile rendering of the skin, anatomical precision, and harmonious balance of the composition testify to the pinnacle of his art, mere months before his premature death at thirty-seven. Housed in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, La Fornarina continues to captivate through its blend of refined eroticism and intimate tenderness, embodying the humanism of the High Renaissance while celebrating earthly beauty with rare boldness for its time.
