About this artwork - painting analysis
In this twilight vision of London painted in 1903, Claude Monet captures the emblematic silhouette of the British Parliament shrouded in a vaporous and flamboyant atmosphere. The Palace of Westminster stands as a majestic shadow at the center of the composition, its Victoria Tower soaring toward a sky ablaze with incandescent pinks, mauves, and oranges. The Thames in the foreground reflects these ardent hues in horizontal brushstrokes that suggest the undulating movement of water. The sun, reduced to an orange globe on the right, barely pierces through the veil of industrial haze characteristic of the Victorian capital.
Monet's Impressionist technique reaches here a form of visionary radicalism. Contours dissolve into dense and vibrant pictorial matter, applied in small nervous brushstrokes that fragment the light. The artist abandons all precise architectural detail to privilege atmospheric sensation, that famous impression which gave its name to the movement born three decades earlier. This London series, executed during his stays at the Savoy Hotel between 1899 and 1901 and then completed at Giverny, testifies to the painter's obsession with the light variations of a single motif – an approach he had already experimented with in his haystacks and Rouen Cathedral.
Monet produced nearly a hundred canvases depicting Parliament under different weather conditions and lighting, tirelessly exploring the chromatic metamorphoses of the famous Neo-Gothic building. This painting belongs to a private collection, a sign of the enduring enthusiasm for these works that transcend mere urban landscape. Through their chromatic boldness and formal modernity foreshadowing abstraction, these London visions constitute an essential milestone in the final evolution of Impressionism toward a total dissolution of form in color and light.
