Painted in 1918 and not in 1925 as often mistakenly mentioned, Amedeo Modigliani's Young Apprentice embodies with touching melancholy the very essence of the style that made the Italian artist famous. This portrait depicts a seated adolescent, his head slightly tilted and supported by his right hand, in a pensive attitude that gives the whole work a profound interiority. Dressed in a dark suit – jacket and trousers – enhanced by a white shirt with an open collar, the young man stands out against a grey-blue background divided by vertical brown and ochre touches that structure the space without overcrowding it.
The sober chromatic palette favors earthy tones and deep greys, punctuated by the ivory complexion of the face with elongated features, an indelible signature of Modigliani. The painter applies here his characteristic technique: fluid and sinuous contours, simplification of volumes, and especially those eyes without pupils that transform the gaze into a contemplative surface rather than a mirror of the soul.
