About this artwork - painting analysis
The Bandini Pietà, sculpted by Michelangelo between 1547 and 1555, embodies the spiritual testament of an artist confronted with his own finitude. This monumental marble descent from the cross, standing over two meters tall, depicts the dead Christ supported by three figures: Nicodemus at the top, the Virgin Mary on the left, and Mary Magdalene on the right. Unlike traditional representations of the Pietà, Michelangelo opts here for a vertical composition where the bodies interlock in an unstable pyramid, creating a gripping dramatic tension. The marble, of a creamy white traversed by darker veins, captures light unevenly, accentuating the contrast between the polished areas of Christ and the rougher, unfinished parts.
This sculpture testifies to Michelangelo's late stylistic evolution, a period marked by formal austerity and intensified spirituality. The artist intended this work for his own tomb, conferring upon Nicodemus's face – often interpreted as a self-portrait – a troubling autobiographical dimension. The treatment of the bodies reveals a newfound freedom: the forms elongate, distort themselves, escaping the canons of classical Renaissance to achieve an almost modern expressiveness. Michelangelo moreover abandoned this project in 1555, partially mutilating the work in a fit of frustration, before it was restored by his pupil Tiberio Calcagni.
Housed in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence since 1981, the Bandini Pietà – named after its later owner Francesco Bandini – illustrates the transition between Renaissance and late Mannerism. Its deliberate incompleteness, far from being a flaw, participates in its emotional intensity: the non finito becomes sculptural language here, suggesting the impossibility of fully translating the mystery of death and redemption. This deeply moving work prefigures the torments of the Baroque while remaining profoundly rooted in the spiritual quest of an aging genius.
