Commissioned in 1826 to adorn a ceiling in the Louvre, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' Apotheosis of Homer stands as a brilliant manifesto of French Neoclassicism. This vast composition celebrates the Greek poet as the founding father of Western literature, surrounded by a procession of artistic geniuses spanning the centuries. At the center of the painting sits Homer enthroned, a majestic figure draped in white, crowned with laurels by a winged Victory descending from the heavens. At his feet prostrate themselves the Iliad and the Odyssey, personified by two women in ancient tunics, while a multitude of creators – painters, poets, playwrights and philosophers – pay him homage in a carefully ordered symmetrical arrangement. The Ionic temple that structures the background lends the scene an architectural solemnity, while the luminous sky bathes the entire composition in a celestial atmosphere.
Ingres displays here the full virtuosity of his draftsmanship, privileging the pure line and sharp contours that characterize his manner. The fluid draperies reveal his meticulous study of Antiquity and Raphael, while the palette dominated by deep blues, luminous golds and delicate pinks creates a refined chromatic harmony. Each figure, meticulously individualized, can be identified: Phidias, Apelles, Virgil, Dante, Racine and Mozart are among this erudite assembly, testifying to the painter's encyclopedic culture.
Completed in 1827 for the ceiling of a room in the Charles X Museum, this ambitious work embodies the academic ideal of timeless beauty and classical order. Ingres here opposes his rigorous conception of art to the excesses of nascent Romanticism, asserting the primacy of drawing over color and reason over passion. The canvas was transferred to canvas in 1855 to be displayed on walls, thus allowing the public to fully admire its details.
