Saint Peter - Francisco Goya

Saint Peter

Artwork by Francisco Goya • 1824

About this artwork - painting analysis

Created in 1824, Saint Peter bears witness to the final creative period of Francisco Goya, then exiled in Bordeaux after fleeing the absolutist Spain of Ferdinand VII. This small oil on canvas measuring 29 x 26 centimeters condenses all the spiritual intensity and modernity of the aging Aragonese master. The apostle Peter appears here in an attitude of fervent prayer, hands clasped, his gaze lifted toward heaven in a silent supplication that transcends the centuries. In the foreground lie the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, the traditional iconographic attribute of the saint, while his white beard and receding hairline accentuate the gravity of this patriarchal figure.

The composition strikes with its radical austerity and restricted chromaticism. Goya favors a sober palette dominated by deep greens, earthy browns, and luminous ochres that sculpt the saint's face. The dark, almost monochromatic background concentrates all attention on the expressiveness of the figure and the spiritual emotion it emanates. The brushwork is free, rapid, almost sketched – characteristic of the artist's late works – and already announces the boldness of modern painting. This nervous execution and this economy of means recall the Black Paintings executed a few years earlier.

This work belongs to a series of representations of saints that Goya executes during his French exile, a period marked by profound introspection and increasing formal austerity. Far from the splendor of the Madrid court and official commissions, the painter explores an intimate, almost mystical spirituality that breaks with Spanish Baroque conventions. The Phillips Collection in Washington, which preserves this painting with great care, allows the American public to admire this overlooked facet of Spanish genius. Saint Peter thus remains a poignant testimony to the creative freedom conquered by Goya in his final years, paving the way for the expressionist research of the following century.
