Dressed in a simple white empire gown with refined lines, barefoot and adorned with a crown of flowers in her brown curls, she embodies the ideal of elegant simplicity that characterizes the aesthetic of the Directory period. The furnishings—this resting couch with its swan-neck curves and the antique candelabrum—attest to the pronounced taste for Roman Antiquity that permeated French society at the time.

The composition reveals David's genius in the art of neoclassical portraiture. The neutral background, treated in grey and ochre tones, concentrates attention on the central figure whose immaculate gown captures all the light.
