About this artwork - painting analysis
Paul Cézanne delivers with Provençal Undergrowth a poetic meditation on the Aix landscape that he never ceased to explore during the final years of his life. Painted in 1906, just a few months before the master's death, this canvas of 81 x 63 centimetres captures the essence of a forest path bathed in soft light, where masses of vegetation merge into an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The eye travels along an ochre trail that winds towards a modest building in orange tones, while on the left an elegant tree trunk structures the composition vertically. At the centre, a rounded form—perhaps a rock or a vegetal arch—dominates the space, enveloped in blues, greens and yellows that respond to one another in fragmented brushstrokes.
Cézanne's technique reaches here a form of lyrical abstraction that heralds the pictorial revolutions of the twentieth century. The contours dissolve, the planes overlap without strict hierarchy, and the paint becomes vibrant, almost transparent in places. The painter works through small juxtaposed chromatic patches, constructing space not through traditional perspective but through relationships of colours and tones. This synthetic approach, characteristic of Cézannian post-impressionism, transforms the Provençal motif into a coloured architecture where visual sensation takes precedence over literal description.
Held at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, this testamentary work bears witness to Cézanne's tireless quest to grasp the profound structure of the Mediterranean landscape. At sixty-seven, weakened yet still driven by his creative passion, the artist continues his intimate dialogue with the countryside of Aix-en-Provence, translating onto canvas a vision that transcends immediate reality.
Provençal Undergrowth thus embodies Cézanne's essential legacy: this capacity to reinvent the representation of the natural world, opening the way to the Cubists, the Fauves and all the pictorial modernity that would recognize in him its founding father.
