About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in the very year of his death, Paul Cézanne's Le Cabanon de Jourdan bears witness to the visceral attachment of the master of Aix-en-Provence to the landscapes of his native land. This late composition depicts a modest dwelling with ochre-yellow walls, crowned by a slender bell tower, nestled at the foot of Mont Sainte-Victoire, whose bluish silhouette stands majestically in the background. Trees with dark, gnarled trunks – pines and olive trees typical of the Provençal scrubland – punctuate the space and create a vertical counterpoint to the horizontality of the vernacular architecture.
The chromatic palette unfolds a symphony of luminous yellows for the cabin, contrasting with the deep greens of Mediterranean vegetation and the violet-blue hues of the emblematic mountain. Cézanne orchestrates here his preferred technique, that of constructive brushstrokes applied in successive planes, conferring on each element a geometric solidity. The visible brushstrokes, laid down in varied directions, simultaneously structure form and space, abolishing the traditional distinction between drawing and colour. This revolutionary approach, characteristic of Cézannian post-impressionism, transforms the Provençal motif into a pictorial architecture where each stroke contributes to the overall balance of the composition.
Held in the Riccardo Jucker collection in Milan, this canvas illustrates the absolute maturity of an artist who tirelessly continued to explore the same subjects – Sainte-Victoire, the surroundings of Aix – to extract their structural essence. In 1906, Cézanne still worked outdoors daily despite his advanced age and health problems, driven by an obsessive quest for pictorial "realisation".
Le Cabanon de Jourdan embodies the culmination of an artistic research that would profoundly influence the Cubists and the whole of modern painting, making Paul Cézanne the true bridge between Impressionism and the avant-gardes of the twentieth century.
