About this artwork - painting analysis

Executed in 1472 by Sandro Botticelli, The Discovery of the Murder of Holofernes illustrates with dramatic intensity the biblical episode drawn from the Book of Judith. This small composition with reduced dimensions – barely 31 x 25 cm – belongs to a series of four narrative panels devoted to the Jewish heroine, commissioned to decorate a Florentine marriage chest. The scene reveals the moment when the servants of Holofernes discover the beheaded body of their Assyrian general, lying on his death bed. Botticelli concentrates the action around the funeral bed where the corpse, draped in white, rests, creating a striking focal point that contrasts with the agitation of the surrounding figures.

The composition is distinguished by its theatrical organization and its keen sense of visual narrative. The male figures, dressed in richly orientalizing costumes in deep tones of red, blue and brown, express through their gestures and expressions shock and dread. In the background, a richly harnessed white horse adds an exotic dimension to the scene, evoking the Assyrian military camp. The Florentine painter uses a warm chromatic palette dominated by carmines, ochres and browns enhanced with gold, typical of his early production. The technique employed – tempera on panel – allows delicate transitions between shadow and light, creating a nighttime atmosphere charged with dramatic tension.

This youthful work testifies to the influence of the master Andrea del Verrocchio, in whose workshop Botticelli trained, while already announcing the characteristics of his personal style: sinuous lines, elegance of drapery and expressiveness of faces. Contemporary with early Florentine Renaissance, this narrative series falls within the tradition of cassoni, these nuptial chests adorned with moralizing scenes intended to edify young brides.

Preserved at the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, this painting reveals how Botticelli transcends the initial decorative function to create a powerful visual narrative, foreshadowing the mythological masterpieces that would ensure his universal renown.
