Our Mission

Les Grands Peintres is a virtual museum entirely devoted to the history of Western painting and its most illustrious representatives. Our mission is to make art accessible to everyone, by offering a complete and free resource on painters, their works and the artistic movements that have marked history. The site is constantly evolving, with new painters (biographies and works) being added successively. Feel free to come back often to stay up to date with the latest news. To date, our database includes several dozen painters, over a thousand paintings and 18 definitions of art movements.

All our pages are written with care and draw on recognised historical sources. We strive to maintain a balance between academic rigour and accessibility for the general public.

Who are we?

Legend has it that the origins of Les Grands Peintres go back many years, to a time when some programming knowledge was instilled in a handful of budding engineers. Some old art history lessons then came back to mind for one nicknamed Titus who, greatly preferring this escape to endless lines of code, decided to embark on this new adventure. From then on, he pursued this idea and was effectively seconded by a programming master, alias Tablette. This union of forces allowed Les Grands Peintres to come to life. The current form has however been revisited since, to bring it up to date.
