About this artwork - painting analysis
Giotto di Bondone transfigures in *Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata* one of the most mystical episodes in the life of the saint of Assisi, when he receives upon Mount Alverne the marks of Christ's Passion. This tempera on wood of imposing dimensions – 313 x 163 cm – testifies to the genius of an artist who revolutionized Italian painting at the turn of the 14th century. The composition is organized around two main figures: Saint Francis, kneeling in an attitude of profound devotion, and the seraphic Christ appearing in the heavens, from which emanate luminous rays bearing the sacred stigmata. The rocky architecture that frames the scene creates a natural setting, while the small chapel on the right anchors the supernatural event in a tangible reality.
The pictorial treatment reveals all of Giotto's modernity, a pioneer of Italian pre-Renaissance. Unlike the frozen Byzantine representations that still dominated the era, the artist infuses an unprecedented spatial depth and gives the figures a striking corporeal presence. The folds of the garments, notably the Franciscan habit with its ochre and brown tones, reveal a new understanding of volume. The chromatic palette, dominated by earth tones, celestial blues, and touches of gold, creates a harmonious balance between the earthly world and divine vision. Light, an essential element of the scene, radiates from the Christological apparition and bathes the saint's face in supernatural clarity.
Housed in the Louvre Museum, this work is part of the vast decorative cycle that Giotto devoted to the life of Saint Francis, a major figure of medieval spirituality. The technique of tempera on panel, characteristic of the period, allows for these luminous colors and this precision of line that are the signature of the Florentine master. Through his humanization of sacred figures and his concern for narrative plausibility, Giotto paves the way for the great artistic upheavals of the Renaissance, establishing a decisive bridge between medieval art and the pictorial modernity to come.
