About this artwork - painting analysis
Giotto di Bondone captures in The Stigmatization of Saint Francis one of the most mystical episodes from the life of the saint of Assisi: the moment when, in prayer on Mount Alverne in 1224, Francis receives the stigmata of the crucified Christ. This imposing tempera on wood measuring 230 x 162 cm bears witness to the innovative genius of the Florentine master who, from the very beginning of the Trecento, transforms medieval pictorial representation. The scene unfolds in a rocky landscape where Saint Francis, kneeling before his modest cell, receives luminous rays emanating from a six-winged seraph bearing the image of the crucified Christ. His companion, Brother Leo, sleeps peacefully apart, unaware of the divine vision manifesting itself just a few steps away.
The composition reveals the stylistic revolution initiated by Giotto: abandoning the hieratic frontality of Byzantine art, he inscribes his figures in a credible three-dimensional space where bodies possess volume and density. Ochre and brown tones dominate the chromatic palette, while divine light radiates from the seraph toward the saint, materializing the miracle through golden lines that connect heaven to earth. The austere architecture of the hermitage and the rocky formations treated with naturalism create an authentic setting that anchors the miracle in tangible reality.
This masterful work perfectly illustrates the transition between medieval art and the beginnings of the Italian Renaissance. Giotto, considered the father of modern Western painting, introduces here a human and emotional dimension absent from earlier representations. Preserved in the Louvre Museum, this tempera likely constituted a retable intended to honor the memory of the Franciscan saint, canonized in 1228, less than a century before the creation of this painting.
Through its innovative spatial treatment and its capacity to breathe life and emotion into sacred figures, The Stigmatization of Saint Francis remains a fundamental milestone in the history of Western art, paving the way for the pictorial achievements of the Renaissance.
