About this artwork - painting analysis
A true masterpiece of French Rococo, Antoine Watteau's Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera captivates with its visual poetry and dreamlike atmosphere. Painted around 1717-1719, this 130 x 192 cm canvas constitutes a second version, more refined and luminous, of the celebrated reception piece presented to the Royal Academy. The artist deploys his genius here to depict a gallant scene in which aristocratic couples prepare to leave the mythical island of Venus, goddess of love. The composition is organized along a graceful diagonal that guides the eye from right to left, from the statue of the divinity adorned with roses to the gilded barque moored on the shore. The figures, dressed in shimmering silks in shades of pink, gold and silver, move through a twilight landscape bathed in vaporous and melancholic light.
Watteau reveals here all the subtlety of his pictorial technique, characterized by a light and vibrant touch that lends the figures a vaporous elegance. Successive glazes create effects of atmospheric transparency while nervous brushstrokes animate the fabrics and foliage. This fluid and delicate manner prefigures the rocaille aesthetic that would dominate eighteenth-century France. The artist truly invents a new pictorial genre, the fête galante, in which the aristocracy stages itself in idyllic settings imbued with amorous reverie.
Housed in Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin, this version testifies to the considerable success of the original composition among enlightened collectors. The canvas perfectly illustrates the spirit of the Regency, a period of transition between the Grand Siècle and the Enlightenment, when art cultivated lightness, refinement and gallant pleasures. Through its narrative ambiguity – is it a departure or an arrival? – and its melancholic poetry, Watteau signs a work that would durably influence the masters of European Rococo and continue to prompt historians to question the profound nature of romantic feeling.
