About this artwork - painting analysis
Commissioned in 1518 by the Emperor himself, the Portrait of Emperor Maximilian I marks one of the final collaborations between Albrecht Dürer and the Habsburg sovereign. The master of Nuremberg captures here the aging monarch in a majestic representation, his face turned three-quarters, his gaze fixed towards an invisible horizon. Maximilian I wears the sumptuous hat and garments of his office, enhanced with precious fur and gilded ornaments. The pomegranate he holds symbolizes imperial power and dynastic unity, a recurring attribute in Habsburg iconography. The neutral background, a deep green tinged with brown, concentrates all attention on the model's physiognomy and reinforces the solemnity of the portrait.
Dürer's technique reaches in this work a remarkable maturity, characteristic of Northern Renaissance art. Every detail – the marked wrinkles of the face, the texture of the fur, the metallic reflections – testifies to meticulous observation and exceptional pictorial virtuosity. Warm colours dominate the composition: the deep reds of the garment dialogue with the golds and browns, creating a refined chromatic harmony. The light, diffuse and subtle, models the volumes of the face with near-photographic precision, revealing the German artist's anatomical knowledge.
Executed shortly before Maximilian I's death in January 1519, this portrait constitutes a precious historical testimony to the sovereign's appearance in his final months. Dürer, who had already depicted the Emperor on several occasions, delivers here an image that is both official and intimate, capturing the dignity but also the weariness of a troubled reign. Housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, this masterpiece perfectly illustrates the fusion between late Gothic heritage and the humanist innovations of the Renaissance, confirming Dürer as the greatest portraitist of his time and immortalizing for eternity the emblematic figure of the last Emperor-Knight.
