The Four Apostles

Artwork by Albrecht Dürer • 1526

About this artwork - painting analysis

Completed in 1526, Albrecht Dürer's Four Apostles constitute the artistic and spiritual testament of the Nuremberg master. This monumental diptych, offered by the artist to his native city, depicts Saint John, Saint Peter, Saint Mark, and Saint Paul, distributed across two panels of impressive dimensions. Dürer orchestrates this composition with particular solemnity: the life-size figures stand out against a neutral and dark background, draped in fabrics of intense colours – blood red, luminous white, deep blue – that sculpt the volumes with masterful authority. The light, skillfully distributed, brings out the faces and hands in a subtle gradation of chiaroscuro.

The pictorial technique testifies to Dürer's perfect mastery, which here combines the precision of Northern drawing with the monumental scope learned during his Italian journeys. Every detail – the folds of garments, the textures of flesh tones, the meditative expression of the faces – reveals this remarkable synthesis between Germanic tradition and Italian Renaissance. The apostles also embody the four medieval temperaments: sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric, and melancholic, bearing witness to the artist's humanist erudition.

This masterpiece is inscribed within the tumultuous context of the Protestant Reformation that was then shaking Germany. Dürer, sympathetic to Lutheran ideas, deliberately chose to represent these founding figures of Christianity with their scriptural attributes – the Gospels and the Epistles – underlining the importance of biblical text against ecclesiastical authority. Inscriptions in German at the bottom of the panels, extracted from the writings of the apostles, warn against false prophets, a theologically audacious stance for the time.

Preserved at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich since the nineteenth century, this diptych remains one of the most accomplished realizations of Northern Renaissance art, where religious conviction and technical virtuosity merge to create a work of timeless spiritual power.
