Artwork by Albrecht Dürer • 1493

About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted at the age of twenty-two, the 1493 Self-Portrait bears witness to Albrecht Dürer's precocious mastery and his innovative boldness in portrait art. On this panel of modest dimensions – 57 by 45 centimetres – the young Nuremberg artist represents himself as a bust, his gaze directed towards the viewer with striking intensity. Dressed in an elegant doublet striped in red and white and embellished with a pleated collar, he holds in his hand a blue eryngo flower, a symbol of conjugal fidelity that suggests this work was probably created on the occasion of his marriage to Agnes Frey. The inscription at the top of the painting – "Things come to me as it is written up there" – reveals Dürer's profound spirituality and his conception of destiny.

The pictorial technique deployed here perfectly illustrates the synthesis that Dürer achieves between Northern tradition and Italian innovations. Flemish precision manifests itself in the accurate rendering of textures – the folds of fabric, the locks of curled hair – while the spatial construction and attention to anatomy betray the influence of the Italian Renaissance that the artist discovers during his first journey across the Alps. Warm tones dominate the palette, with ochres, browns and that striking red which immediately catches the eye, whilst light gently models the face in subtle chiaroscuro.

Held in the Louvre Museum, this self-portrait belongs to the journeyman period, a crucial moment when Dürer travels across Europe to perfect his apprenticeship. It prefigures the remarkable series of self-portraits that the German master would create throughout his career, making him one of the first artists to establish himself as a subject worthy of study. This foundational work heralds the revolution of the artist's image during the Renaissance, moving from the status of craftsman to that of intellectual creator.
