About this artwork - painting analysis

The sole depiction of the female nude in Diego Velázquez's body of work, Venus at Her Mirror captivates through its boldness and restrained sensuality. Painted around 1648 during the Sevillan master's stay in Italy, this canvas reveals the goddess of love reclining on her back upon a bed draped in dark fabrics, contemplating her reflection in a mirror held by Cupid. The composition unfolds along an elegant diagonal, guiding the viewer's gaze from Venus's feet to the mysteriously blurred face reflected in the oval mirror. The striking contrast between the pearlescent flesh of the female body and the grey and black fabrics enveloping it creates an intimate, almost clandestine atmosphere, heightened by the crimson red curtain occupying the background.

Velázquez's painterly technique achieves remarkable virtuosity here, characteristic of Spanish Baroque. Fluid brushstrokes and mastery of tonal gradation lend the skin an almost tangible texture, while the sfumato of the face in the mirror—deliberately softened—preserves the mystery of the figure's identity. This audacious approach to the female nude remained exceptional in Catholic Spain during the Golden Age, where the Inquisition maintained strict vigilance over the morality of artistic representations. The artist likely drew inspiration from Italian Venuses, particularly Titian and Giorgione, while bringing his own realistic vision, free from excessive mythological idealization.

Held at the National Gallery in London since 1906, this work experienced a tumultuous history. In 1914, suffragette Mary Richardson slashed the canvas in an act of political protest, leaving seven cuts that were subsequently restored. This Venus remains an essential milestone in the history of nude representation, testament to the evolution of artistic and social attitudes, and continues to exert considerable influence on generations of artists who followed.
