Diego Velázquez signs with The Forge of Vulcan one of the most audacious mythological representations of the Spanish Golden Age. Created in 1630 during the Sevillian painter's first Italian sojourn, this monumental canvas immortalizes the instant when Apollo, bathed in divine light, bursts into the workshop of the blacksmith god to reveal to him the infidelity of his wife Venus with Mars. The scene captured by Velázquez freezes the moment of stupefaction: Vulcan and his four Cyclops assistants interrupt their labor, their faces expressing disbelief and surprise at this devastating announcement.
The composition reveals Velázquez's innovative genius as he transposes an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses into a radically realistic environment. Contrary to the idealized conventions of Italian mythological painting, the Spanish master transforms the celestial forge into a perfectly recognizable earthly workshop, populated by workers with vigorous but imperfect anatomies, far removed from heroic canons. The instruments – anvil, hammers, armor in the course of manufacture – are reproduced with almost tactile exactitude. The chromatic palette combines the warm ochres of flesh and drapery with the metallic grays of worked iron, while the light sculpting the bare torsos contrasts with the supernatural radiance emanating from Apollo, the only truly divine element in the scene.
This work testifies to Velázquez's assimilation of Italian lessons – notably Caravaggism and its dramatic chiaroscuro – while asserting a deeply personal approach. Housed in the Prado Museum, The Forge of Vulcan illustrates the painter's unique ability to humanize myth without distorting it, prefiguring the naturalism that would characterize his entire subsequent output.
