About this artwork - painting analysis

Commissioned in 1777 to adorn the dining room of the Princes of Asturias at the Palace of La Granja, Francisco Goya's The Parasol brilliantly inaugurates the Spanish painter's career as a royal tapestry designer. This youthful work bears witness to the freshness and lightness characteristic of the tapestry cartoons that Goya created for nearly twenty years for the royal Santa Bárbara manufactory. The rustic scene presents two young people in an idyllic landscape: an elegant maja seated, dressed in a gown with yellow and blue tones heightened with white, and a majo standing who shields her from the sun by unfurling a vast green parasol above her. A small dog rests peacefully on the young woman's lap, adding a touch of intimacy to this balanced pyramidal composition.

The luminous palette favors warm and soft tones – ochres, pinks, orange-browns – which contrast harmoniously with the bold green of the parasol and the touches of blue in the sky and clothing. Goya already demonstrates his mastery of natural light that envelops the figures and creates a serene atmosphere, typical of the late rococo style then in vogue at the Spanish court. The execution remains smooth and refined, in keeping with the decorative requirements of the era, far removed from the expressionist boldness that the painter would develop in his later works.

This idealized representation of Madrid's popular life falls within the tradition of gallant genre scenes, inherited from Watteau's French fêtes galantes and adapted to Spanish taste. Goya transfigures social reality here into an Edenic vision, offering the aristocracy a reassuring and charming image of the people. Housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, The Parasol remains one of Goya's most celebrated cartoons, perfectly embodying the transition between declining rococo and the emergence of a new sensibility that would radically transform Spanish art.
