Francisco Goya captures in The Water Carrier all the dignity of a young woman from the Madrid working class, immortalizing with tenderness and realism a scene from everyday Spanish life in the early nineteenth century. Painted in 1810, this canvas of modest dimensions bears witness to the Aragonese master's constant interest in popular types and small trades that animated the streets of Madrid. The composition, deceptively simple in appearance, nonetheless reveals a perfect mastery of visual balance and human presence.
The young water carrier stands out forcefully against a neutral background with grey and misty tonalities, a characteristic technique that concentrates all attention on the main figure. Dressed in a deep burgundy skirt and a white bodice enhanced by a striking yellow shawl, she holds firmly against her a terracotta pitcher while her other hand grasps a wicker basket. This chromatic palette—dominated by warm ochres, luminous whites, and this vivid yellow—creates a striking contrast that animates the composition. The young woman's face, treated with particular care, expresses a quiet serenity, almost a silent pride in the accomplishment of her daily task.
Goya deploys here that free and virtuosic pictorial technique that already announces the modernity of the nineteenth century. The energetic brushstrokes, particularly visible in the treatment of the fabrics and background, testify to that spontaneous touch which characterizes his period of maturity.
