In the final years of his life, Rembrandt van Rijn created with Saul and David one of his most introspective and psychologically powerful compositions. Completed in 1660, this monumental canvas measuring 130 x 164 cm illustrates a biblical episode from the First Book of Samuel: the young David, future king of Israel, soothes the tormented melancholy of King Saul through his music. The Dutch painter transforms this narrative into a profound meditation on human vulnerability, jealousy, and the redemptive power of art. Housed in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the work testifies to Rembrandt's exceptional stylistic maturity during his late period.
