About this artwork - painting analysis

Commissioned around 1600 to enrich Spanish collections, El Greco's Purification of the Temple illustrates one of the most dramatic episodes in the Gospels: Christ's expulsion of the merchants from the Temple in Jerusalem. The Cretan painter settled in Toledo treated a subject he was particularly fond of, as he created several versions throughout his career. At the centre of the composition, the figure of Christ stands out majestically, dressed in a pink tunic and blue-green mantle, wielding a whip to drive out the vendors and money changers who profaned the sacred place. Around him, bodies come alive in a whirlwind of expressive gestures and sumptuous drapery in warm tones – saffron yellows, deep ochres, olive greens.

El Greco's Mannerist technique achieves remarkable virtuosity here. The elongated figures with extended proportions, characteristic of his personal style, create a spiritual tension reinforced by luminous contrasts. The chromatic palette, both brilliant and sophisticated, dialogues with the monumental architecture that frames the scene. The arcades in the background open onto an imaginary urban perspective bathed in bluish light, creating a theatrical depth. The massive columns in the foreground accentuate the theatricality of the event, while the interplay of shadow and light sculptural volumes with an almost mystical intensity.

This modest-sized version, preserved at the National Gallery in London, testifies to El Greco's artistic maturity at the turn of the seventeenth century. Trained in the Byzantine tradition before absorbing the Venetian lessons of Titian and Roman Mannerism, the painter developed in Toledo a singular pictorial language that transcends conventions. His treatment of this biblical subject, marked by gestural expressivity and visionary spirituality, prefigures Baroque boldness while maintaining a modernity that would lastingly influence Western art, up to the Expressionists of the twentieth century.
