About this artwork - painting analysis
Francisco Goya signs here one of his earliest known self-portraits, created in 1777 when he was only thirty-one years old and aspired to establish himself in Madrid's artistic world. The young painter depicts himself in three-quarter view, his gaze slightly turned toward the viewer, with an expression that is both direct and introspective. His face, illuminated by soft light that sculpts the volumes and enhances the radiance of his forehead, emerges from a dark background characteristic of Spanish baroque tradition. The restrained palette favors browns, deep blacks, and warm ochres, while a few touches of orange enliven the clothing and create a subtle contrast with the luminous complexion.
The painting technique already testifies to Goya's mastery of chiaroscuro, a direct legacy from Velázquez and Rembrandt, whom he deeply admired. The brushstrokes, still relatively smooth and controlled, reveal an artist concerned with demonstrating his academic skill before adopting, later, that free and bold touch that would characterize his mature works. The 1777 Self-Portrait falls within a pivotal period when Goya, recently settled in Madrid, sought to obtain royal commissions and gain recognition from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
This intimate painting, now held in a private collection, offers precious testimony about the painter's appearance and personality before the historical and personal upheavals that would radically transform his art. The slightly melancholic expression, almost pouting, contrasts with technical assurance and already announces that psychological depth that Goya would masterfully develop in his later portraits. This work remains an essential milestone for understanding the evolution of an artist who, from late rococo to the dark visions of the Black Paintings, would traverse and transfigure his century.
