About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in 1861, On the Racetrack testifies to Edgar Degas's early fascination with the equestrian world and the leisure pursuits of Parisian bourgeoisie during the Second Empire. This youthful canvas reveals an artist still seeking his visual identity, oscillating between the academic tradition inherited from his masters and a more modern approach to composition. The painting captures the elegant and fashionable atmosphere of horse racing, a subject Degas would explore consistently throughout his career, long before becoming the official chronicler of the Opera's dancers.

The composition is organized around a gathering of riders, carriages, and elegantly dressed spectators, arranged in the lower register of the canvas. At the center, a woman in a luminous yellow dress immediately draws the eye, creating a chromatic focal point that contrasts with the darker tones of men's clothing and horses. The background unfolds a rolling landscape of brilliant greenery, punctuated by majestic trees and a pale sky where blue and ochre blend together. This spatial depth still reflects the influence of classical painting, notably from his stays in Italy and his admiration for the old masters.

The brushwork remains relatively smooth and academic, far from the luminous fragmentation that the Impressionists would develop a few years later. Yet the choice of contemporary subject matter and attention to modern life already announce the preoccupations of the Impressionist movement, of which Degas would become one of the major figures, while maintaining a critical distance from plein air painting and the dissolution of forms.

Held at the Kunstmuseum in Basel, this work marks a fundamental stage in Degas's artistic evolution, foreshadowing his systematic exploration of movement, instantaneity, and spectacular society that would characterize his mature work and durably influence modern art.
