About this artwork - painting analysis
Bathed in golden light that seems to filter through an invisible curtain, Melancholy by Edgar Degas captures in 1874 the very essence of modern solitude. A young woman, seated in an abandoned posture, appears absorbed by her thoughts, her gaze lost toward an inner horizon that the viewer can only imagine. Dressed in a gown with brown and orange tones heightened by touches of blue, she embodies that diffuse sadness which fascinated artists of the late nineteenth century. The intimate composition, concentrated on this reduced format of 19 x 24 centimeters, transforms this domestic scene into a true theater of intimate emotions.
Degas deploys here his exceptional mastery of pastel and oil, creating a vaporous atmosphere where contours dissolve into a chromatic haze characteristic of his impressionist approach. The visible brushstrokes, particularly in the treatment of the background where yellows, ochres and pearly grays dominate, generate an almost tactile texture. This fragmented technique, combined with the bold use of color to model volumes rather than strict drawing, testifies to the aesthetic revolution underway. The painter distances himself here from the ballerinas and equestrian scenes that will bring him renown to explore the intricacies of female psychology.
Created during the very year of the first impressionist exhibition, this work perfectly illustrates Degas's interest in suspended moments and fleeting states of mind. Unlike his contemporaries fascinated by open-air landscapes, he favors the observation of bourgeois interiors and moments of vulnerability. Preserved today at the Phillips Collection in Washington, Melancholy reveals a psychologist Degas, scrutinizing the human soul with the same acuity with which he observed dancers in the wings of the Opera. This small canvas prefigures modern explorations of urban isolation and remains a poignant testimony to the female condition in the industrial age.
