About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted around 1630, Georges de La Tour's The Fortune Teller illustrates a scene of urban deception typical of the seventeenth century: a richly dressed young man is relieved of his jewels by a fortune teller and her accomplices. The Lorraine painter captures the precise moment when, under the guise of reading the future in the palm of the naive victim, four women of different ages orchestrate a pickpocketing scheme of remarkable coordination. While the old woman, with her wrinkled face and cunning gaze, diverts the victim's attention, her associates work discreetly: one cuts the gold chain, another steals the purse. The pyramidal composition concentrates the viewer's gaze on this silent ballet of calculated gestures.
The chromatic palette deploys warm tones – coral pinks, luminous oranges, deep ochres – enhanced by the brilliant whites of the headdresses and the richness of damask fabrics. Georges de La Tour demonstrates here his mastery of Caravaggesque naturalism, while moving away from the brutal contrasts of Italian tenebrism. The light, though diffuse, sculpts the volumes with precision and reveals the texture of sumptuous fabrics, from delicate embroideries to sophisticated turbans. Each sartorial detail testifies to a meticulous observation of the social reality of the period.
This work belongs to the tradition of moralizing genre scenes, particularly prized in seventeenth-century Europe. The theme of the fortune teller, popularized by Caravaggio, enjoyed resounding success among collectors. La Tour offers his own personal interpretation, less dramatic but psychologically more subtle, where each character reveals their nature through their expression and attitude. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, this version testifies to the painter's most accessible period, before his evolution toward mystical nocturnal compositions.
The Fortune Teller remains one of Georges de La Tour's major contributions to French Caravaggism, combining technical virtuosity and penetrating social observation in a timeless warning against human credulity.
