About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in 1859, the Portrait of Marguerite Degas bears witness to a pivotal period in the artistic development of Edgar Degas, then a young painter of twenty-five still deeply marked by academic tradition. This representation of his first cousin, Marguerite De Gas – the artist would later simplify the spelling of his surname –, captures the discreet elegance of a young woman from the Paris bourgeoisie of the Second Empire. Dressed in a black dress with layered flounces enhanced by a pale pink scarf tied in a delicate knot, the model poses in an interior whose muted tones – olive green, ochre and burnt sienna – create a soft and intimate atmosphere.

The composition reveals the manifest influence of Italian masters whom Degas studied assiduously during his stay in Italy between 1856 and 1859. The hieratic pose, the meticulous treatment of fabrics and the attention paid to sartorial details recall the portraits of the Florentine Renaissance, particularly those of Ingres whom the young artist deeply admired. Yet modernity emerges in the tight framing and the sketch of a landscape glimpsed through an opening on the right, a device that anticipates the bold compositions that would later bring him fame. The sober palette, dominated by deep blacks and muted greens, contrasts with the luminous touch of pink that irresistibly draws the eye toward Marguerite's melancholic face.

This canvas belongs to Degas's early output, a period when he still practiced society portraiture before devoting himself to ballet scenes and racecourses that would make him famous. Housed in the Musée d'Orsay, this family portrait testifies to the already exceptional technical mastery of an artist who would become one of the pillars of the Impressionist movement, while remaining faithful to a classical rigor that would always distinguish him from his contemporaries.
